Community in gaming is a tricky beast. Starting out with LAN parties, in the modern day most people now play from the comfort of their own home on their own. Retaining this sense of comradery, closeness and belonging is key not just for FACEIT, but for a thriving gaming scene.

Community Clash

February 2022

 

FACEIT wanted to create the biggest clan vs clan battle on the platform in support of Gamers Without Borders. Clans of all sizes, from esports teams and professional players to your average back yard group of friends were entered into a platform wide competition with a 1.5M FACEIT Point prize pool to prove themselves.

Together with a PM, I created a new system that allowed for two separate leaderboards so players could track both their individual progress and as well as their clan’s. On top of this, I also introduced match-gated lobbies that required a certain amount of matches played on-platform in order to counter smurfing in response to user feedback.

Key results:

  • 47.36% increase in weekly Clan players across FACEIT

  • 59.91% increase in weekly total Clan matches played

Hackathon

What a rush!

Organised by engineering managers within FACEIT, we ran a 24 hour hackathon*. Alongside a PM and two developers, I created a ✨FULLY FUNCTIONAL PROTOTYPE BUILDof the platform-wide domination game that allowed players to earn points through playing matches on FACEIT and spend those points to deploy and battle other communities for control of a map.

Alongside this, I also developed a full feature loop that walked everyone through how to play the domination game and where it would sit within FACEIT’s architechture.

What else?

  • Design systems

    • Regular maintenance and changes to our design system (FUSE)

    • Key player in weekly team-wide discussions on FUSE and proposed changes

    • Large updates made across the platform including recreation and updating of components with 60,000+ instances

  • Important milestone projects

    • Reimagining of the Play experience on FACEIT

      • Moving the site towards a lobby-first, play-focused site in order to refocus FACEIT users on the core purpose of playing.

    • Large scale Growth & Monetization project based on personalisation of players’ onsite presence

      • This was unfortunately postponed indefinitely due to an internal restructure following the high-profile merger with ESL underneath Savvy Gaming Group. Designs for this are not able to be shared online at this stage, but happy to talk through the project itself 🗣

    • Advertising updates to allow for video advertisements on FACEIT. This has since been rolled out platform-wide resulting in large increases in each user’s monetary worth to the platform.

    • Checkout improvements. Following some user testing of our payment flows, I redesigned them in order to improve user conversion rate

    • Upgrade pages. Along with our graphic designer I redesigned our FACEIT Premium upgrade page in order to create a more Premium, rich-media variation.
