Re-framing how you learn what’s happening in the world around you

The Telegraph app

November 2019

Brought on towards the end of 2019 to lead their flagship design project for the year, I was tasked with an entire redesign of their news app, merging both a live and traditional daily paper experience.

Built over the course of roughly nine months, I went from pen and paper sketches to wireframes, POC designs, prototypes to the final build. Throughout this process we worked closely with developers both internal and external, in order to create the brand new Telegraph app.

During the desigining of this app, I built a fully functional prototype within Figma using the autolayout feature, where editors and designers alike could mock up entire feeds using an easy to switch prototype across desktop, tablet and mobile devices to be able to test their layouts.

At time of writing, the Telegraph app has over 21,000 reviews on the App Store, sitting at 4.4 / 5 ⭐️

Fantasy Fund Manager

November 2021

Have you ever heard of Fantasy Football? You and your friends pick a team of players and score points based on how they do in real-life games? Now imagine that for stock trading and you’ve understood what this project is about.

A solo project to reboot, enrich and expand a previously very small part of Telegraph Money section using a combination of my extensive knowledge of gamification and UX.

I started by completely overhauling the UI, moving to a more modular visual style that allowed for the inclusion/exclusion of components quickly and easily. Secondly, I addressed the previously very confusing iconography and colour system used in order to make it easier for players to understand what sector a particular fund belonged to.

Lastly, I looked at improving the feature loop itself –

  • Added functionality to create a template portfolio for users who weren’t sure which stocks to pick

  • Increased control over rebalancing of your funds throughout the day in order to create more of a ‘day-trading’ level of volitility and excitement so players could react to the day’s events

Some stats on how it went:

  • Targetting 10,000 players for our first game, we ended up with 14,500 — a 45% increase

  • After the success of the initial game, editors were keen to create a gated, subscribers-only game. Despite limiting the entry to only paying members, we achieved roughly 6,000 players, with a huge amount of them being new subscribers to the platform

  • Partnering with a friend and mathematician, we developed a system of eight colours within the RGB colour-space which were “most different” from each other. These were then tweaked to sit closer to a brand palette.
